Welcome back, Navigation Links are now at the bottom of the page. Last week we in “I Got Fired” we talked about You and The Law of Like attracts Like. This week is… Thought Control… that scary thing we all fear. Yes, we do fear it. The thought of someone else “controlling” us via mental powers is frightening. Is it possible? Yes… or Hypnotists would be out of a job. Plus Governments, both here and abroad, have been working on that for decades. IF they succeed we will never know that they did… for obvious reasons. Let’s face it, controlling thought is a Very Powerful ability… too powerful for the so called “common” man to have procession of. So I don’t know if the Government is directly controlling our thoughts or not but… I do know our thoughts are being manipulated. They are being manipulated by the Government, the Advertising Agencies, The Entertainment Media, Our Preachers, Teachers, family members, and even people we see at work and play. As a matter of fact, even You manipulate other people’s thoughts although you may not realize it. Any time you try to convince someone else of something you are trying to manipulate that persons thought patterns. You know that to be a fact if you think about it for a moment. Any time we see an advertisement for Pepsi, Ford, or any other product they are trying to manipulate our thoughts. That is the whole purpose of advertising, well the primary purpose anyway. In some instances the purpose is to educate but the process is still the same with the ultimate purpose of manipulating your thoughts. Political campaign ads are a good example of that (educate) method. Let’s talk about Political ads for a few moments because there are some keys in them that will help you identify how you process information. Basically there are two types of Political ads. One, “My Candidate is the Best” which educates you on the virtues and abilities of that Candidate, and… Two “Their Candidate is Bad” (and these type of ads get nasty) which tries to educate you on the weaknesses or faults of the opposing Candidate. Both types work. The first one places the thought in your mind that their Candidate is something “Good” for you and unless you are exposed to opposing ads that are effective that thought remains… you vote for that Candidate. Now the opponent may also be using the same method and their ad may also be saying “My Candidate is Good” so what happens there is your mind has a choice of two “Goods” to pick from. The best Copywriter wins in that war. The second one places the thought that the opposing Candidate is “Bad” therefore your mind deducts that “if the oppositions Candidate is “Bad” then this Party’s Candidate must be “Good.” Not necessarily a valid conclusion but that is the way our minds work. If both Candidates are using what is called “smear” campaigns then your mind makes the choice of the lesser of two evils. One more comment on the Political Campaign scenario, we see seemingly unworthy Candidates re-elected over and over again. Why? Partly because of money buying good advertising but there is another underlying aspect of those occurrences… people hate change. They, myself included, resist it at all levels, consciously and unconsciously. Understanding all three of those points is important to your own personal growth along the journey of Using the Law of Attraction. We make choices because we believe the choice is good for us, because we want to avoid something we believe is bad for us, or because we are resisting change. That’s it, which is the way our minds work. Any choice we make is the result of one of those three mental processes. Also, I want to remind you that our thoughts are “stimulated” by other people’s actions as I discussed last week. Although it may not be on a conscious level that the other person is controlling our thoughts they are, in fact, doing so IF we do not control them (our thoughts) ourselves. So that brings us to the purpose of today’s article… how to control our own minds How to Control Your Own Mind First of all I want to realize that the steps to accomplish this are many. Not all of the steps are easy in the sense that you achieve immediate success… very often quite the opposite. And some are more difficult than others. But the benefits gained make the effort well worth it. You WILL become something new, a New being with New powers that you may have never imagined you could possess. Getting there is done one step at a time though. This first step (actually I’ll address two steps today) is aimed at creating a mental environment within yourself instantly that is positive in nature. It is not difficult but it does require purpose of mind. A positive attitude (mentally) has all sorts of subtle benefits not the least of which is a healthier body so let’s get started. The Flip Switch Method. Often events occur that bring to the surface thoughts of anger, disappointment, resentment, frustration, judgment (a really common one), or fear because of our past experiences. These thoughts or feelings seem to well up in us automatically, and they do… if we allow them. When this happens we say someone has pushed our button, flipped our switch so to speak. Often it happens without us being aware of what caused it. Being in line behind a slow and un-organized person in the check out line often brings negative thoughts of judgment to the surface of our thoughts. That unfortunate person probably attracts that “energy” everywhere he or she goes, spreading it like a disease… which it is, a mental disease. So there you are, in line, waiting, and waiting, and waiting… with all sorts of thoughts occurring about that person. One thing you need to realize is that thoughts are almost as powerful as spoken words. Those thoughts you are having are “negative energy” thoughts and what do you think they attract? More of the same. Or have you ever met someone you immediately disliked, or entered a place that immediately you felt uncomfortable in? Most of us have. Now that is not always a bad thing. Sometime those feelings/thoughts are worth paying attention too depending upon how valid the sources of those feelings or thoughts are. If you walk into a place of business, a fast service store for example, and immediately feel uncomfortable it may be because your senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell) picked up something that is a warning of danger. Maybe you caught a glimpse of a gun in someone’s belt on the way in, or maybe your sense of smell detects spoiled food. Remember there are millions of bits of information coming in through our senses every second and not all of them are brought to the conscious level but the information IS gathered. In that instance you would want to pay attention to those feelings because your subconscious is trying to tell you something. If, however, in that same place you don’t immediately feel anything unusual but when you take your purchase up to the cashier and as soon as the cashier speaks you feel angry then that is something else entirely. Either that cashiers voice or facial expression “pushed your button” and your thoughts or feelings sprung up out of nowhere for seemingly no reason. Ah, but there is a reason… buried deep in your mind, in your memories. At some time in your past you had an unpleasant experience involving someone that had the same voice pattern or the same facial expressions or features. Your mind stored that information and is now recalling it… along with the feelings associated with that experience. In all likeliness that cashier has absolutely nothing to do with those feelings. So, you complete your purchase and leave the store, get in you vehicle, and begin to drive away… angry. And I’ll bet you don’t even know why you feel that way. You don’t want to go around being angry (attracting like energies from others) and certainly not while driving a vehicle so what can you do about it? The first thing is to “stop being angry” (judgmental, frustrated, etc)… you can identify what happened later. You can do that by simply switching your thoughts to something happy, beautiful, or pleasant. We all have good as well as bad experiences in our memories. So here is how you do it. Think, right now, of an experience that greatly pleased you. It may be the first time you got to hold someone you love, a mate, a child, or even a pet. It can even be the first time you got to do something you always wanted to do such as drive that new car or lay on the beach at Hawaii. Or it could be the time you gave a “perfect” speech or successfully learned a new skill. The important thing is that it made you fell REALLY GOOD. Now… write that experience down (yes, actually write it out on paper in your own hand writing) and relive it in your mind. Actually, write out several “good” events. By the way, something that struck you as extremely funny is an excellent “switch” when you recall it. You have just given yourself a powerful tool to control your own thoughts. You already had this tool but now you are going to learn how to use it. Every time you feel angry or frustrated (or any other unpleasant feeling) recall that time (the GOOD one), that event, in your thoughts. No one can feel two emotions at the same time, close together yes but not at the same instance. You will discover that those feelings of anger go away… or are at least suppressed, and your perspective changes for the better. Thoughts of anger, frustration, envy, fear, and even ones such as selfishness, greed, and lust are all debilitating thoughts. Your mind will be much more resourceful if it is in a happy or at least neutral state. If you take control of your thoughts then you take control of your emotions. Once you have control of your emotions you have control of your life. The second, which perhaps I should have covered first, and it is Gratitude. Holding a mindset of Gratitude is essential to your progress in using the Law. In our everyday existence there are a multitude of things to be grateful for. We simply take them for granted forgetting how important they are to us. Giving heartfelt thanks for them will give more power to all your other efforts involving the Law. The most obvious of these is the very fact that you woke up this morning. Give thanks for that. You now have another day to become a better you. And when you opened your eyes you also opened you mouth and breathed in… Oxygen (actually Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon, and other trace gases) that is freely given to you compliments of the Universe. You don’t pay for it and you can use all you want. Be thankful for what the Universe is supplying. Imagine if you opened your eyes and there was no Oxygen… within two breathes you would die. I am certainly am thankful for it. Then there are your family members and/or friends to be thankful for. If you have a house or apartment, a vehicle, a job, health, food, and decent clothing, each of things are reasons to be grateful. Many of us forget that nearly half the population on this planet doesn’t have the things we have. So, be ever thankful for all that is yours. Now you don’t have to go through a big showy ceremony to do this, just be sincerely thankful in your mind for what is received. Think… if you give someone something or do something for them and they express gratitude you are more likely to do something similar for them in the future are you not? Well the Law is the same way, as is above so is below is often said about the relationship between the physical and the spiritual. Keep in mind that the spiritual aspect of us is energy, the same energy that exists throughout the entire universe. You can call it Universal Energy, God, The Source, or whatever name you want to give to it… just give thanks to it. Give thanks when you wake up, give thanks when your car starts, give thanks when you eat, give thanks when your spouse nags you,… Oops, did I say that? Yes I did, give thanks when you are challenged for then you are given an opportunity to grow. Hopefully you get my point, show Gratitude throughout each day’s events and use the Flip Switch method to alleviate negative thoughts. If you can do those two things then you will discover the world around you will be better, and so will you. Next week will be aimed at “manifesting” your desires. To your Happiness, Layard
